book notes

Posted in culture at 9:04 PM by alexlozada

Our staff has begun sharing book recommendations during our biweekly staff meetings.  A few weeks ago, Kristal Dove recommended Same Kind of Different as Me, the true story of homeless Louisiana sharecropper Denver Moore and upscale art dealer Ron Hall, whose lives connect because Ron’s wife Debbie has a heart for people.  Kristal said. “because Denver is the homeless one, Ron assumes he’ll help Denver but it turns out the other way around.”  Some MCC members and small groups have been serving “people kicked to the curb of life” for a while. Kristal recommended this book for those who need a reminder on the transformation that comes from serving.

This week, Ethan Magness recommended Prodigal God by Tim Keller, lead pastor at Redeemer Presbyterian Church.  It’s a re-examination of the story from Luke 15:11-32 of the younger son who runs away from the father and returns, and the older son whose physical body stays home but whose heart is far away.   Ethan recommends this book, especially for those who have been part of the church but have lost (or never had) their hunger for God.

Message Notes – Feb 22

Posted in MCC resources at 5:29 PM by alexlozada

I was at North Shore Christian Church (Riverhead –  Long Island, NY) on Sunday because I’m part of the management team that oversees this new church in its early stages.  I did listen to Ben Cachiaras’ message on-line so that I could jot down some notes from the message, especially for small group leaders who are using the “Walk Across the Room” study guides.

Walk Across the Room – Feb 22 study guide

Posted in MCC resources, more disciples at 9:49 PM by alexlozada

MCC’s February message series wraps up w/ “Grander Vision Living.”  The study guide uses two stories from Luke 5, along with other Bible verse, to show us God’s grand vision for reaching those who are far away from Him.

Matthew parties

Posted in more disciples at 11:29 PM by alexlozada

As a resource for this Sunday’s message “Grander Vision Living” that concludes our “Walk Across the Room” series, my teammate Kristal Dove wrote these suggestions for hosting a Matthew party.  I also found posts from Wade Rogers and a Campus Crusade blog on the same topic.

Matthew parties are a good way to combine connecting with your fellow group members, and reaching the people-Jesus-misses-the-most.  If your MCC small group is planning a Matthew party, I’d enjoy reading about it.

Washington and Lincoln

Posted in history at 7:08 PM by alexlozada

One of my daughters said to me Sunday that we should have a holiday for every President’s birthday – I replied that not every President is as well-liked as Washington  & Lincoln.  I’m guessing her sudden desire to celebrate our country’s leaders had more to do with a day off from school than the influence of overhearing citations of 1 Timothy 2:1-2 or 1 Peter 2:13-17 in inauguration coverage.

She knows that Abraham Lincoln is my favorite president for several reasons, and not only because we share initials 🙂  C-Span released another survey of historians rankings of US Presdents (cached html version here) with Lincoln again in the top spot and George Washington “moving up” to number two (ahhh – the joys of ranking presidents like NCAA sports teams).  My favorite assessment of Lincoln and Washington comes from a long ago American Heritage article by Clinton Rossiter that compares and contrasts the two.   He concludes by emphasizing their similarity, “Each had principles in which he believed with something akin to childlike faith, but the principles were never permitted to harden into dogmas that might obstruct the hard choices that had to be made.”

Here are notes on Sunday 15 Feb message from MCC”s Pastor for Community Impact Luke Erickson. He used Psalm 107 to prep us for how to tell our stories once we’ve “walked across the room.”

Walk Across the Room – Feb 15 study guide

Posted in MCC resources at 3:10 PM by alexlozada

My teammate Luke Erickson, MCC’s pastor for Community Impact, will be speaking this Sunday on “The Power of Story.”  This week’s study guide intersects with his message text from Psalm 107, and also looks at two other examples of the power of Jesus-influenced stories from John 9 and John 4.

church events of the bible

Posted in better disciples at 7:50 PM by alexlozada

I’ve referred to my teammate Ethan Magness’ blog On the Walk before, and he’s writing a thought-provoking series of posts on “church events of the bible” – specifically in the book of Acts.  I borrowed from “prayer meetings” and “business meetings” for the opener of a ministry team meeting earlier this week.  If you are a part of a small group, read “temple and homes” and think about how to deepen the relationships among people in your group – is it through the connecting that happens from sharing food or are there other ways that fit your group dynamics?

Posted in better disciples, MCC resources at 4:35 PM by alexlozada

Notes for today’s MCC message “Living in 3D” part 2 of Walk Across the Room series.  Someone shared a great “responding to God’s nudge by walking across the parking lot” story with me between the 9a & 11a service @ Cook Auditorium.  I hope he emails it to mystory@mountainchristian.org

The study guide for Living in 3D is also available from MCC’s website, along w/ MP3 from last week’s message.  I’ll post the notes I take during the Sunday’s message some time that afternoon.  If anyone has a story to share about following God’s nudge to Walk Across the Room, send it mystory@mountainchristian.org
