No Fear! Don’t Be Afraid to Believe (message resources)

Posted in better disciples at 5:46 PM by alexlozada

Ben preached on purpose and trust based on Mary’s reaction to the angel Gabriel in Luke 1:26-38. These are notes I took during the message, along with a draft of the small group study guide. MCC’s technical arts team has been posting video of the messages, so I’ll be adding that when it goes online. Meanwhile, you can listen to the audio.

MCC-Milligan interns taste of NYC

Posted in better disciples at 11:38 PM by alexlozada

Many thanks to those who helped make the Thur-Fri interns trip possible! Faith Couch & Sara Pereda of Forefront Church took us around the corner from the church office to a little cafe called L.A. Burdick for hot chocolate and warm conversation about their individual spiritual journeys and insights into working with an urban church plant.

Brent & Rhesa Storms (Orchard Group and Church of the Incarnation) opened their apartment and their hearts to us as they told the story of the Spirit’s leading in their lives. My mom, dad, and sister shared the hospitality of their home Thur PM, even amidst own hectic lives of health challenges and work. Back in Maryland, MCC’s Semester in Ministry team of Jill Shuck & Ethan Magness supported Lydia Oliver, Andrew Norman, and Nicki Chadwick throughout the school term and graciously endorsed sending them on this memorable highlight.

No Fear! Don’t be afraid to pray (message resources 6 Dec)

Posted in MCC resources at 8:15 PM by alexlozada

Ben Cachiaras spoke about the Luke 1:5-25 story of the angel’s message to Zechariah to begin MCC’s new Christmas series No Fear. Many MCC small groups are switching from study time to charitable service opportunities or celebration gatherings in December, but I’m continuing to write a study guide for those who want to follow through on the weekly message.

One of my favorite Christmas carols “O Come O Come Emmanuel.” MCC’s – Community Outreach Pastor Luke Erickson wrote a Communion meditation for today’s service (included in notes I took during the service) that connected the meaning of Emmanuel = “God with us” to Jesus coming to be with us as a baby at Christmas, a man dying on the cross, and still with us today “even to the end of the age.”

Christmas serving + reflecting

Posted in better disciples at 11:23 PM by alexlozada

As the Christmas season grows more hectic, thank you to the MCC volunteers who join tens of thousands of others around the country to raise support for the ministry of the Salvation Army.  My daughter Ely & I made a quick trip to the Abingdon Walmart for school supplies, and met 3 different MCC friends who braved the falling temps to be bell-ringers at the kettle. Her student ministry small group is so enthusiastic about serving that they will ahve TWO different shift times to accomodate them all 🙂 If you’re interested in volunteering, there are still open spots – sign-up here.

Here’s video from a couple weeks ago of the Salvation Army kick-off in Washington just down the I-95.

And as the Christmas season grows more hectic – at the far end of the Christmas celebration spectrum from serving amidst the shopping bustle and silver bells is this Advent devotional from Ruth Haley Barton on waiting on God. The whole Christian life, and Christmas in particular, is the balance between doing (serving, reaching) and waiting.
