Slow! Children At Play + Grace Happens (resources 25 Apr)

Posted in MCC resources at 6:18 PM by alexlozada

Ben Cachiaras wrapped up the brief message series Signs of Life by talking about two more “unwritten” signs that characterize Mountain Chr Church: “Slow! Children At Play” AND “Grace Happens.” Here are message notes and small group study guide (ROUGH DRAFT).

Ben closed the message by retelling Tony Campolo’s powerfully challenging story of throwing a birthday party for a prostitute at 3:30 in the morning.

ServeFest 2010 OR Metro Chr Conv – choose only one

Posted in NACC, NYC, the Northeast at 11:48 PM by alexlozada

Can’t be two places at once – often a ministry dilemma (occasionally a family one, too), especially at a thriving church like MCC. Here’s a recap of the Good Morning Maryland @ 9 segment on the Baltimore county version of this year’s ServeFest, including video. Heather & my girls will be volunteering w/ dozens of MCC students and adult sponsors at the Equestrian Center, and then over to MCC’s Mountain Rd campus for the ServeFest tailgate party.

Meanwhile, I’ll be attending the Metro Christian Convention in Queens NYC. Our family used to attend every year when we lived on Long Island, but I’ve not participated since we moved to Maryland five years ago. I’ll be passing along information about this year’s North American Christian Convention and Eastern Christian Convention while I’m at the Metro, as well as spending the day w/ my parents and sister – worthwhile to be sure, but another day when I would like to be in two places at once 🙂

Ben C began a new series Signs of Life – the kind of signs Mountain is showing to our community.  Sunday’s message focused on “come as you are” and “people matter.” Here are notes I took during the message and the small group study guide. You can also download mp3 audio of the message, or listen online.

Invite from Ben Cachiaras for Sun 25 Apr lunch

Posted in servant-leader at 2:19 PM by alexlozada

This is especially for MCC small group leaders, but I’m guessing we’ll welcome anyone in the Central Maryland area interested in hearing Emmanuel School of Religion new president Mike Sweeney.  Emmanuel is the seminary where my teammates Tom and Amy Moen, Ethan and Betsy Magness, Luke Erickson, and Ben Cachiaras graduated.  Mountain also helped name one of their learning Institutes the Dr. Charles Cook Institute for Christian Ministry, for our own Charles Cook, Minister Emeritus here at Mountain.

“Dr. Sweeney will be involved in the morning worship services, and lead the Perspectives class that evening.  Mike is not only a good friend, but an amazing individual, with over 20 years of missionary field work, specializing in translation of the New Testament among the people of Papua New Guinea. After the last service on Sunday, April 25, about 1 or 1:15, we will get together for an hour in the Overlook of the New Life Center (Mountain Rd campus) for a time to talk about Emmanuel and its ministry. You are invited!  Bring anyone with you who may be interested.  Come to get an update on the latest innovations in training people for ministry and preparing students at Emmanuel. Come if you have some questions about how Emmanuel and your life might possibly intersect at some point. Come if you have questions about online learning opportunities, or want some help figuring out where God may be leading you.  Come if you want to talk to a veteran missionary who now is devoting his life to leading an institution that prepares others for ministry.  Come to listen and learn what God is up to in the lives of people all over the world who have prepared at ESR.

You are free to eat ahead of time, or bring your own lunch, or order a sandwich ahead of time which we will then have prepared and ready for you.

Hope to see you there.

Ben

To order your lunch, please indicate what type of sandwich you would like from the list below and email it back to Gail Oliver at Gail@mountainchristian.org no later than April 21, 2010.  You can just pay for your sandwich and drink by dropping some money in a basket when we meet.

I would like to order: (please specify number of subs)

Turkey & Cheese

Ham & Cheese

Italian Cold cut

American cold cut

Note:  Sandwiches will be served on 8” sub rolls with bottled water and a bag of chips with all condiments on the side for $5.00 per person.

Heather & I enjoyed our first time worshipping @ MCC’s new Bel Air campus. Ironically, campus pastor Luke Erickson (also MCC’s Community Outreach pastor) was at the Mountain Rd Campus speaking on “The Three Chairs.” Here are message notes and a new small group study guide. As a bonus 🙂 here are study guides on similar messages from 2009 and 2008.

Easter message resources 4 Apr

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Easter Sunday at MCC celebrated with 10 services in 3 locations by 7136 people – Yay God! Ben and the creative arts team made extensive use of humor, stories, video and pics – the ones below are just a few referenced during the service. Also, a small group study guide and my own message notes jotted down while listening.

Ben showed the first part of this funny commercial to make a point about sometimes we need to do some things for ourselves. He also told a funny illustration about a donkey stuck in a pit, the punch line being “shake it off and step up!” As always w/ YouTube videos, the comments are NOT censored, so Surf At Your Own Risk

At the climax of the message, Ben referenced Tony Campolo’s story about fellow preacher: older, African-American, and very inspiring!
