American Idols “Physical” (video+resources 20 Jun)

Posted in better disciples at 11:41 PM by alexlozada

My staff teammates might be glad that our American Idols videos are coming to an end 🙂 as Ben Cachiaras concluded the message series with “Physical.” You can download audio (or livestream or subscribe to podcast) of the message (as well as rest the series) from the MCC website.  [ROUGH DRAFTS] Also, my notes from the message and the study guide for small groups that are using the messages as background for their group time.

Luke Erickson, MCC’s campus pastor for our Bel Air site (meeting @ John Carroll School) spoke at our Mountain Road campus, at the same time that Ben Cachiaras gave the same message on  “Pleasure” from our American Idols series @ the Bel Air site.  For small groups using the message for their discussion, here are my quick notes from the message, and a group study guide (INCOMPLETE DRAFT).

church management software = hi-tech shepherding

Posted in tech at 11:23 PM by alexlozada

Lots of on-line meetings last several weeks to evaluate church management software-services packages are part of the reason I’ve been behind on posting message-based study guides. After browsing other products, and web+speakerphone presentations by reps from 5 companies, MCC is looking at two strong packages from People Driven Software (now part of Elexio) and Church Community Builder. Each product has its strengths and weaknesses (I’d rather you email me if you want my off-line, thorough analysis) but both of them would be great tech tools for staying connected with Mountain’s ever-growing congregation.

Even the most adamant tech geek like me must come back to the fact that the most crucial key to the effectiveness of any church software package (or any hi-tech tool) is the end user. Specifically for my ministry:

  • how to equip and inspire small group leaders (and coaches and apprentices or whoever else in each small group will do the data entry) to use the software often enough and thoroughly enough so that the data is usable (garbage-in, garbage-out = if the info is months outdated, not very useful for helping people now or planning for the future)
  • small group leaders and coaches who use the info they learn from the software to shepherd the people in their groups, and invite people who aren’t yet grouped.

No matter the technology (or lack of it) – shepherding is always about how much we who are junior (under / mini) shepherds are following in the footsteps of the Great Shepherd – knowing the people in our flock – whether through software or never-old-fashioned listening 🙂 AND helping them grow.

American Idols “People” (funny video + resources 6 June)

Posted in MCC resources at 3:24 PM by alexlozada

MCC is using American Idol spoofs (featuring MCC staff as less-than-talented contestants) to introduce the Sunday messages in our current series on the false gods we’re tempted to worship. Last Sunday, Ben Cachiaras spoke about how “People” (and our relationships) can become idols.  Resources for follow-through include: mp3 audio + notes I took during the message + a small group study guide.

American Idols “money god” (resources 30 May)

Posted in MCC resources at 11:37 PM by alexlozada

Several good meetings last week (that I might eventually find time to blog about!) have me scrambling from even further behind in my writing than usual – sigh. . .

Speaking on the topic of money in a church is  challenging in light of our culture’s stereotypes of silver-tongued, sticky-fingered tele-evangelists. Rob Kastens addressed the topic of the “money god” in the second of our American Idols series “Portfolio” – keeping the “P’ words pattern 🙂 Here are my notes on the message, a small group study guide, and message audio.

On the lighter side – here’s the humorous video we used as the message intro 🙂
