Remembering Dr Charles Cook

Posted in better disciples at 11:52 PM by alexlozada

Last Saturday, Heather & I attended the memorial celebration for Dr Charles Cook. Others who knew him better, including his son Kevin, Leroy Lawson (Dr Cook’s successor at Central Chr Church, Mesa AZ), Naomi Kouns (longtime teammate of Dr Cook at Christian Missionary Fellowship), and MCC’s senior pastor Ben Cachiaras, spoke movingly of  Dr Cook’s influence throughout God’s kingdom.

Dr Cook graciously welcomed me to MCC’s staff when I began six years ago, especially drawing on our mutual connections to CMF, and ministry on the East Coast. He was the trailblazer for MCC’s Celebrate Recovery program, then passed the baton for its oversight to me as CR launched. Though his public activity at MCC slowed in the last few years,  I was grateful for his participation as I pulled together MCC’s  Great Communion service 4 Oct 2009, because he was a long-time champion of cooperation among the three strands of the Restoration Movement. So I join the tens of thousands of others who owe are heartily grateful for the ways the Spirit worked through Charles Cook.

According to Jim: Riding Out the Storm 23Jan resources

This Sunday, Luke Erickson (MCC Bel Air campus + Community Impact Pastor) speaks on “Riding Out the Storm” from our new message series According to Jim – a 6 week look at the Bible book of James. I was hoping to write all 6 small group study guides ahead of time so that they could be printed in booklet format – sadly, I’m still behind schedule. I did upload (an almost final draft of)  this week‘s study guide. I’ll add my notes about Luke message some time on Sunday afternoon – early evening.

To make up for not having the complete study guide booklet, I’m thinking about making YouTube video for group teaching / discussion (here are some of mine from last Fall) OR podcast (not tried this yet). I will be posting to links on Bible verses from the messages and study guides at YouVersion.com (username alexl3) – I used this a little bit during the Cannonball series, and I’m hoping to make it an ongoing small groups resource.

Reset – Alt + Del Jan9+16 resources

Posted in MCC resources at 11:13 PM by alexlozada

Ben Cachiaras wrapped up MCC’s brief Reset series with messages on following God’s “Alternate” way (videostudy guide + message notes), then asking God to “Delete” things from our past (videostudy guide + message notes).

I need to work on an alternate to get these message resources posted sooner – sigh 😦  I’m caught between trying to follow through on guarding “white space” in my schedule (as MCC learned in our Christmas series) and keeping up w/ covering gaps from recent MCC staff transitions.

Ben closed the “Alt” message with a reference to CS LewisVoyage of the Dawn Treader and Eustace Scrubb’s dragon dilemma, and I’m feeling “hard and rough and wrinkled and scaly” dragon-ish about some of my overdue work, so I’ll pass along this link. . . .

MCC’s Student Ministries pastor Matt Silver spoke about giving control of our lives to Jesus as part of MCC’s newReset series (videoaudio). I’m still digging out from being away on vacation for a week, but here are drafts of last Sunday’s messages notes and small group study guide.
